About Koenig Martial Arts

Sensei Koenig

Sensei Koenig has been practicing Martial Arts for over 35 years. He began training under his sensei, Mark Pinner, at an after-school karate class much like those he teaches today. He has been teaching karate programs in Tampa Bay area schools, churches and childcare centers for over 20 years.

Sensei Koenig has trained in several styles of martial arts and holds the rank of Go Dan (Fifth Degree Black Belt) in Shotokan Karate through the Traditional Karate Organization headed by Sensei Joe Mirza. In addition to his karate training, Sensei Koenig has also trained in kobudo (weapons) for many years and holds the rank of black belt, the first ever awarded by his sensei.

Shotokan Karate Do

Shotokan Karate is the most popular form of karate practiced throughout the world. It was developed by Gichin Funakoshi in the early 1900’s as a fusion of other disciplines.

Shotokan Karate-do is a very linear form of martial art. It is often characterized by deep stances – to strengthen legs and develop a strong foundation, and powerful, explosive movements – to maximize force of strikes.

As students develop in their training and understanding it becomes apparent that Shotokan Karate is not simply a striking art, but consists of many other techniques such as joint locks and takedowns as well.

Our Dojo

At Koenig Martial Arts, we train primarily in Shotokan Karate-do supplemented with a mix of several other styles. Our training floor is over 2000 square feet with matts, heavy bags, stretching bars and other equipment.

But the best part is our students! We have a great Dojo Family where students encourage one another and build each other up to truly become better people.

Christian Karate

At Koenig Martial Arts, Family Karate classes are taught from a Christian perspective. Students are not required to be Christians to participate in class.

Often times people ask, "How do martial arts and Christianity go together?"

The answer is, "Very well!"  - Karate is an excellent tool to understand and build upon our walk with the Lord as Christians.
